Tell me about NYC lifeguard training?

Here's my story. I just became a lifeguard this summer in a little rinky dink town; no body ever goes to the pool and if they do all we do is baby sit. I want to be a lifeguard in NY at the beach next summer. I meet all the requirements, or at least i will by next summer. However, I live in NC. Can I still get a job up there? and also, it said the training usually is one day a week for 16 weeks. Are there classes that just last like a week? Obviously there is no way I can go up there every weekend for four months. Also, how different is NYC training than regular redcross training?
