How do you insulate a timber floor?

I currently live in a house with tongue and groove timber boards laid on 200mm x 50mm timber joists sat on brickwork sleeper walls. Is it acceptable practice to pack and surround quilt insulation in between the timber floor joists from the underside of the floor to prevent heat loss and aid insulation in general.
