Why is flying from Canada to Florida cheaper?

I'm about to book a flight, I'm going to North Carolina, but I don't understand why it is that picking a flight to Fort Lauderdale which has a stop in North Carolina, almost $200 cheaper than flying directly there. Can anyone explain this? And would it be hard to get my suitcase once I land in NC before they put it in the next plane?
