Can I get my license without having insurance in the state of NC?

I live in North Carolina and I want to get my license. I don't have insurance or a car, but there are times when certain members of my family can't drive and its really inconvenient. Their car(s) are insured but I've heard that I needed to get car insurance as well. I'm not sure, I will be calling the local DMV in the morning, I just wanted to go ahead and find out. I'm a little impatient... ;p
